Prevalence of Asthma and Rhinitis in Workers Employed in a Cleaning Company

Prevalence of asthma and rhinitis in a company to the cleaners - I. Pixies, A. Busetto, A. Recoil, F. Vergara, A. Syracuse - G Ital Med Lav Erg 2010, 32:4, Suppl 2.

Background: Cleaners are exposed to a high number of cleaning agents and are at increased risk of work-related asthma and rhinitis. The aim of this study was to assess the prevalence and determinants of asthma and rhinitis in 234 subjects working ina cleaning company.

Methods: In this cross-sectional study 234 workers of a cleaning company, 126 and 108 nonexposed controls, completed the Italian version of the ECRHS I and RCRHS II occupational modules to assess the exposure to cleaning agents and prevalence of asthma and rhinitis and performed lung function tests.

Results: 54% of subjects worked as cleaners in public buildings, hospitals and schools, and 46% were not exposed to cleaning products (controls), e.g., white collars and drivers. Cleaners were 4 years older than controls. The prevalence of current asthma was 6% in cleaners and 1% in controls, and rhinitis was 17% and 15% respectively. Using glass cleaning sprays at work 1 ore more day/week was associated with current asthma (OR=19,0, CI 2.1-159.9). Younger cleaners (less than 39) had a greater risk of asthma (OR=5.0, CI 1.2-21.7) than those older than 39 years old.

Conclusion: Cleaning work may induce asthma. The use of glass cleaning sprays is an important determinant. We also found a higher risk of asthma in younger cleaners that could be explained in two ways: the healthy worker effect an/or the increased risk of developing occupational asthma in the first 2-3 years of work exposure.

Orientamenti pratici per la determinazione delle esposizioni sporadiche e di debole intensità (ESEDI) all'amianto nell'ambito delle attività previste dall'art.249 commi 2 e 4, del D.lgs 9 aprile 2008, n.81 come modificato e integrato dal D.lgs. 3 agosto 2009, n. 106.

Si tratta del provvedimento approvato il 15 dicembre 2010 dalla Commissione Consultiva Permanente per la salute e Sicurezza Labor in art. 6 of Legislative Decree 81/08.

Volevo commentare quanto letto sul giornale della Lega Nord di Ospitaletto ed in particolare a quanto riportato da Ezio Abrami (che a detta del Sindaco Giorgio Prandelli all’uscita dell’incontro avuto in Regione, dovrebbe essere il referente dell’Amministrazione Comunale per la questione Bosco Stella).
Non voglio far polemiche che ritengo inutili ed improduttive, noi preferiamo FARE, ma ritengo opportune clarification.

Air Pollution and Exposed Workers: Traffic Police Officers of Air Quality

Air Pollution and Exposed workers: an observational study based on a cohort of traffic police officer city of Genoa.

Air pollution and exposed workers: an observational study on a cohort of municipal police officers of the town of Genoa.

Concentrations of benzene, CO, NO2, O3 and PM10 in urban atmosphere of Genoa have been analysed from roadside air pollution monitoring sites in order to identify the presence of eventual critical situations and adverse health effects in exposed workers such as urban traffic vigilants. The monitoring campaign, monthly performed by ARPA technicians from 2005 to 2009, shows higher pollution phenomena in the center of urban area, sites 2,6 and 8. The obtained data have been statistically evaluated and correlated among themselves and with the pulmonary functions of urban traffic vigilants (ANOVA uni- and multivariate). No critical situation appears as far as the average concentrations of atmospheric pollutants are concerned and the key indicators of lung functions too (FVC, MVV, FEV1, FEF25, FEF50, FEF75); the observation regards values collected at the beginning and the end of the campaign. At last statistical analysis demonstrates decreasing values of MEF75 connected with sites 2, 6 and 8 (P respectively= 0,06, 0,07, 0,09) to confirm that the central sites represent critical zones. However this observations is not particularly significant becouse involves only hight respiratory tracts, in absence of chronic pulmonary syntoms or diseases, and a further investigation on a larger pattern is requested.

ARPA Lombardia has published a report on air quality in the provinces of Milan, Monza and Brianza relating to ' 2009.

The pollutants considered are sulfur dioxide, nitrogen oxides, carbon monoxide, ozone, benzene, PM10 and PM2, 5, benzo (a) pyrene and heavy metals nel PM10.
In generale si riscontra una tendenza alla diminuzione per le concentrazioni degli inquinanti da traffico cone il monossido di carbonio e gli ossidi di azoto, mentre nessun miglioramento per il PM10 (nei mesi invernali) e l'ozono (nei mesi estivi).
Per quanto riguarda il PM10 esiste il limite di 50 microgrammi/mcubo come valore limite per la protezione della salute umana da non superare più di 35 volte all'anno e 40 microgrammi/mcubo come valore limite per la protezione della salute umana.
Su 15 centraline dell'area il valore registrato è stato superiore ai 50 microgrammi/mcubo per più di 35 giorni l'anno in tutte le centraline ed è stato superiore a 40 in 13 centraline.

Il Comitato Salute e Ambiente di Ospitaletto comunica che ha promosso l’iniziatita “UNA CARTOLINA CONTRO BOSCO STELLA”.
L’iniziativa prosegue l’azione di sensibilizzazione e mobilitazione che abbiamo voluto intensificare da giugno di quest’anno quando abbiamo organizzato la biciclettata ecologica presso la cava di Bosco Stella e che è continuata il 22 ottobre con l’incontro pubblico a cui hanno partecipato i quattro Sindaci dei Municipalities of Castlewellan, Ospitaletto, Paderno Franciacorta and Passirano which was followed by the meeting of the Lombardy Region on November 17 between the four mayors and the coordinator of the Committee with the Chairman of the Environment Committee of the Lombardy Region Frosio Joshua.

Wednesday, November 17, 2010 I went to the Lombardy Region with Daniela Gerardini Passirano Mayor, Joseph Orizio Mayor of Castlewellan, Giorgio Prandelli Ospitaletto Mayor and Mayor Antonio Vivenzio Paderno Franciacorta for an appointment with the President of the Environmental Joshua Frosio which was also attended by Regional Director Pierluigi Toscani ITER authorization to take stock of the new landfill Stella Woods which would affect 97% of the territory of ITH for 3% of the territory of Paderno Franciacorta, 200 meters from the town of Ospitaletto and concerned for the consequences, including the territory of Passirano.

A study of these poor owners of the quarry which seems to violate rights by denying the approval of the new landfill, but I say to them has been authorized by the Convention of the quarry excavation planted to complete, this is their right acquired and no one denies him, the further requirement that they have done for the construction of the landfill, has not acquired until the State does not issue the requisite authority to which, if refusal is not violated any law.
